TANDBERG Leadership Continues with Breakthrough in ‘Personal’ Video Communication Products

Clients like Heinz see stronger ties, higher productivity

New York, USA, and Oslo, Norway, Nov. 1, 2004 -- TANDBERG® (OSLO: TAA.OL), a global leader in visual communication, today unveiled three breakthrough personal video communication products. The suite includes a personal unit featuring an 8.4-inch high-resolution screen with optional handset and headset, a 17-inch widescreen system designed to replace the traditional computer monitor, and a mobile system for small meeting rooms and offices.

The offering comes as more companies sharply increase their investment in visual communication, extending it throughout the workplace – from the boardroom and executive office to vertical markets such as the manufacturing floor, educational classrooms and telecommuting.

  • A unit in every workspace: The 8.4-inch screen TANDBERG 150 is a compact unit that runs seamlessly on an Internet Protocol (IP) network capable of integrating voice and video. Users can place IP voice or video calls at up to 512 kbps. The system allows face-to-face communication and viewing of presentations and provides a cost-effective desktop video solution for the entire organization. The TANDBERG 150 also features an optional handset and headset.
  • Fulfilling an executive’s desktop requirement: While the TANDBERG 150 introduces visual communication to mainstream business use, the new TANDBERG 1500 MXP provides a complete video system for executive use and an alternative to the traditional computer monitor. The product features a 17-inch integrated LCD screen. It provides 2 Mbps video calls as well as CD-quality stereo audio. Executives can share documents and connect to multiple sites. The 1500 also is wireless capable.
  • Beyond the boardroom, flexibility and mobility: The TANDBERG 2000 MXP is a new system for small meeting rooms and offices. With a 23-inch video screen supported by a slim and elegant mobile stand, this futuristic unit fits sleekly into tight quarters. The system features TANDBERG’s latest technology innovations in sound and video-quality.

One of the early adopters of video communication, H.J. Heinz Co. steadily has increased its use of the technology worldwide. Since the global food company switched to an Internet Protocol network, meaningful adoption of the technology has accelerated.

“The TANDBERG 150 brings video communication to the masses. It’s no longer just an executive tool,” says Allan Jackson, European Voice Manager for H.J. Heinz. “Since we moved to IP, not only are calls free, but the user experience is so good that people are knocking on my door asking for more video across the organization.”

Among other uses, Heinz employs dozens of video units for its global brand teams to collaborate regularly. Reflecting the quality advances in video communications, Heinz’ Allan expects employees soon will start demanding the technology at home as well. “Already we have remote employees enabled with IP technology, so personal video conferencing in the home offices isn’t that far away,” he maintains.

“Before long, business cards will include a video phone number,” says Andrew Miller, chief executive officer of TANDBERG. “With today’s major technological innovations, personal video lies within anyone’s reach. Indeed, the age of visual communication has arrived full force.”

“As TANDBERG continues to offer the answer for any visual communication need with its endpoints, network products and management system, and with correct market pricing, we expect these new personal systems will further drive the adoption of visual communication,” he added.

The 1500 MXP and 2000 MXP will support multi-protocol environments that include H.323, SIP and SCCP, providing choice and flexibility to users. TANDBERG intends to leverage its partnership with Cisco Systems, Inc. to further extend the functionality of the 150. Currently all of the personal products are SIP-ready and in early 2005 TANDBERG plans to make SIP available.

The video communication industry’s revenues are among the fastest-growing in technology, and are expected to nearly double by 2008, climbing to $1.1 billion from $530 million in 2003. This growth explosion reflects dramatic improvements in quality, including crisp, real-time action, CD-quality sound and multimedia features. And Internet Protocol, Voice over IP (VoIP) and Video over IP reduce visual communication costs and promote widespread adoption.

As previously announced, TANDBERG will introduce firewall traversal technology in early 2005, following the company’s recent acquisition of Ridgeway Systems & Software Ltd. The new firewall technology will speed adoption of video over IP by enabling video and voice communication between any and all IP endpoints. Traditional corporate firewalls usually only allow the most commonly used services such as Web and e-mail and will usually reject voice and video.

The new TANDBERG video products are available and shipping today.
